Works on Paper is my go-to for any paper-based materials that warrant item-level conservation! Carolyn is happy to simply stabilize and create a better housing for an item (in one case, a cemetery map on a large piece of brown paper) if you don't want a full conservation treatment. That said, her rates are reasonable and her estimates provide a helpful array of possible treatment options to suit different budgets.

2 ★★☆☆☆
An unfortunate experience that ended a would-be long-term partnership. As a small business owner in Vermont, this isn't a review I have been looking forward to leaving. Our experience was so overwhelmingly negative, however, that it needs to be shared, especially as we were exceptionally hopeful that this would be the first of many positive interactions in perpetuity. We own a fine and rare bookshop and had two pieces that needed fairly straight-forward paper restoration. We started a conversation with the owner at the end of September '25 and dropped off the two pieces on October 14th. They were moving into a new studio and I knew these wouldn't be worked on immediately, but an expectation was set that the work would begin within the following several weeks. As of January 6th '26 I had not heard a word from the owner, neither an expression of the work that had been done, nor an explanation that their schedule was causing delays to the work we had commissioned. I followed up with a text at that point to check in and was told they were out of the studio until Friday (the 9th) and they would follow up then. On the 14th, I had not heard from them and followed up again, and received no response. On the 27th I sent another message requesting a response and explaining that I would come pick up the items regardless of where they were in the project, as I had lost faith due to the lack of communication. Although the text of the 27th did not receive a direct response, a few hours later I received an email from the owner that clearly demonstrated receipt of the content of my texts and in which they expressed a willingness to do the work (but offered nothing of an explanation as to why they had been M.I.A. nor an offer to do anything to salvage the frayed relationship). I declined the offer, emphasizing that the lack of communication was unacceptable, that the delay would not have been a problem if they had keep me in the loop, and asked to pick up the work ASAP, without any work being done. The owner finally expressed some responsibility but immediately undercut the sincerity of the apology by claiming that they "had accidentally blocked my phone number" and, accordingly "did not receive any of my texts." This was, of course, a provable lie as they had responded to the message on the 6th and made no attempt to contact me afterward, and responded to the content of the message on the 27th but through a different medium. The lack of professionalism and general disrespect is entirely unacceptable. The only reason this review is not worse is that the books came back to me without any further damage or deterioration. I hope this business takes this as a learning opportunity, takes some responsibility for their actions, and becomes a service rather than a detriment to their community.
