Just picked up the oval, hand carved Chinese table you can see in the pics above. The photos here in my review are before and after pictures. Please look closely. There are two after pictures showing an absolutely beautiful finished piece! Incredibly happy with the whole process. 1) I contacted him months in advance to give him time to fit me in to his busy schedule, and time to do the work. - So, in exchange he had the time to enjoy the restoration, and thus do an outstanding job. 2) It was for my wife’s birthday. - He met the deadline, first because he’s a great guy, but second because he cared to make her happy. 3) He gave an estimate after seeing the piece in person. - I don’t know if he came in over or under budget, but he honored his original estimate. He said, “I saw it in person when I estimated it. So that’s the cost.” I mean, an expert craftsman that meets expectations in budget and timeline while doing superb work. What more could you want?! We are bringing the matching minibar to him next!

John is a true professional. He is very knowledgeable about furniture and did a beautiful job on two pieces of furniture for me. A broken bookcase and an antique sewing box. He restored the sewing box to its original condition without losing its charm. The top was warped the decal had a major scratch and when he was finished with it you would never know. I highly recommend him.

Wow! John and June restored a family heirloom bed that we had broken and then stored in the garage for a few years. This is a bed from around 1880, and we love it. The bed finish was dull, and many shoddy repairs were made by my family over the last half a century. Well John took this loved but bedraggled bed from sad to spectacular, and very affordable too considering the quality work. Would 100 percent hire again

John is truly amazing! While the work he did for me was not conservation… he is a master craftsman. For decades I have wanted a hidden bookcase door and now in our mid century modern house it has finally happened… thanks to Mr. Steffen. I had gone through a list of woodworkers and contractors who said they just couldn’t do it but not John. He looked at it as a challenge and he exceeded all expectations. I feel so lucky to have found him and will happily call on him again in the future

John replied promptly on a Sunday night to put my fears to rest he could fix my grandparents 1939 bed that had just broken. He is from the same Midwest area that I am from. I knew the bed was in good hands. It is fixed better than brand new. So happy!

Had the pleasure of working with John. He came to my house for a free quote to fix the broken door on my TV stand. I thought he did a great job considering how bad the break was. He did not charge me anything because he felt the work wasn't up to his par. He said he could have gotten it perfect, but it would've been way to expensive for me. He was communicative throughout the process. 10 out of 10 recommend. Its rare to find a company that has these principals.

John was so incredibly knowledgeable and kind and generous with his time. I merely wanted to get some questions answered about a chair and had a whole history lesson. It was awesome. Very grateful.

I came into possession of a very intricately carved wooden chest that would take a lot of work and money to refinish. John was very nice and informative describing what my options were and even when I said I couldn’t afford the services he stayed on the phone and answered all the questions I had about taking care of the chest and even some cool history about it. He was very knowledgeable and if in the future I have another piece or decide to take my current chest in I will for sure go here.

My wife inherited a walnut table, 6 chairs, and a console unit, all made by a master craftsman 60 or 70 years ago. One chair seat was broken and the rest of the pieces were in various states of disrepair. We’ve had the set for 30 years or so but hadn’t been able to find an expert restorer to take on the project til recently when we discovered John Steffan had open a workshop here after many years in the Chicago area. From pictures of his work and discussion of his plan for our furniture it was clear he was the guy to restore our treasured pieces. He recently completed the work and we couldn’t be happier as he had returned everything in like new condition. Suffice it to say we’re glad we waited for the right craftsman to do the work and he was a pleasure to work with as he described many aspects of the original craftsman’s history and processes employed. If you want the work done right by someone who knows every aspect of his business look no further. Thanks for your honesty and attention to detail John, you’re the best!

John fixed and refinished my Gt Gt Grandfather’s chair that was given to me. The glue had worn out and it has been in pieces for almost 2 years. What an amazing job John did! It looks better than I ever remember and still has that old antique look. My family thought it was about 1865 but after talking to John maybe early 1900. John does amazing work and it fairly priced. He kept me informed throughout the process and sent pictures along the way. I highly recommend him to anyone! Thank You John!
